Julianna M. Pazos

The Classics Department mourns the tragic loss of Julianna Pazos, who passed away from an illness on January 22nd, 2011. Julianna graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a B.A. in Classical Civilization in June 2010. At that time, the Department awarded Julianna with the Joan Palevsky Award for Extraordinary Achievement, in recognition of her exceptional performance in our program. She was a remarkable student whose radiant presence affected all who knew her. We are heartbroken to learn of the loss of such a promising and inspirational young woman. Julianna will be remembered fondly by her teachers and classmates, and we express our deepest sympathy to her fiancé, family, and friends.

We have posted here some photos of Julianna on her graduation day in remembrance of her bright sprit and outstanding accomplishments. The quotation from C. S. Lewis is one that she herself found solace in at the time of her graduation, as she looked toward the future after suffering through the untimely death of her own mother just months before.

"Every day in a life fills the whole life with expectations and memory."

-C.S. Lewis

If you would like to post a remembrance of Julianna we invite you to do so on the Classics Department’s Facebook page.

If you are in need of someone to talk to about this difficult news, please do not hesitate to contact UCLA Counseling Services.
